Reflecting on Te Wiki o te Reo Maori

I have been reflecting on Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori here at Burnside. We have had a variety of activities each lunchtime which have involved a  large number of students. There has been lots of new learning and lots of fun.
As a staff we have also been involved in using Te Reo in our classrooms. One way is by using Whakatauki or proverbs. I enjoy using the words of people I believe to have something worthwhile to convey. Here is my pick for this week - It conveys the idea of the importance of language. The language of Te Reo and also my subject, English.

Ko te reo te tuakiri
Ko te reo tōku ahurei

Ko te reo te ora.

Language is my identity.

Language is my uniqueness.

Language is life.

Striving for Success

Teachers at Burnside High are currently writing reports for all students and they will go out to parents over the next few weeks. It is a good time to reflect on being successful. Gaining high marks is a combination of many factors. Going to class, being engaged in learning, working in a focused manner, handing in assignments and working to the best of your ability. But it is also about aiming high, striving for that success.
The quote below reflects that idea.

Whaia te iti kahuranga ki te tuahu koe me he maunga teitei
Aim for the highest cloud so that if you miss it, you will hit a lofty mountain
